Create a handkerchief using Kaga Yuzen dyeing techniques with a traditional craftsperson

Learn yuzen dyeing from a Kaga Yuzen artist and you can make unforgettable memories in Kanazawa!

Kaga-Yuzen dyeing is one of Japan's most beautiful and gorgeous traditional crafts for kimonos. Kaga-Yuzen has a history of more than 500 years and most of the processes are still carried out by hand. The realistic, graceful, hand-drawn floral and botanical patterns in particular are very Japanese.

You can experience "coloring" and "yuzen nagashi (washing)," which are characteristic of the production process, under the guidance of a Kaga-Yuzen artist.

First of all, please choose the design of either irises or cherry blossoms drawn by the artist. The pattern is outlined with both blue pigment extracted from flower and resist paste on a large white cloth. Next is coloring. Please paint the pattern in your favorite colors. The artist will teach you unique Yuzen dyeing techniques, such as Tarashikomi (blurring) and Mushi kui (painting leaves to look like they have been eaten by insects). By using these techniques, you can make an

authentic work. Then, you wash away the blue pigment and the resist paste applied in the initial process. After drying, it is finished with an original "Kaga-Yuzen" stamp.

The Kaga-Yuzen artist in charge is one of the few tradititonal craftspersons with very high skills. Just meeting them and seeing their delicate skills is worth the experience for you.

The experience is limited to one group at a time, so anyone can participate at ease. Of course, you can take the finished work home right away. The only handkerchief in the world!
