Kaga-Yuzen dyeing is one of Japan's most beautiful and expensive traditional crafts for colouring kimonos. Kaga-Yuzen has a history of more than 500 years and most of the processes are still carried out by hand. The realistic, graceful, hand-drawn floral and botanical patterns in particular are quite Japanese.

You can experience "coloring" and "yuzen nagashi (washing)," which are characteristic of the production process, under the guidance of a Kaga-Yuzen artist.

First of all, please choose either the iris or the cherry blossom, two kinds of designs drawn by the artist of Kaga-Yuzen. The pattern is outlined with blue lines on a large white cloth. Next is coloring. Please paint the pattern in your favorite color. The artist will teach you techniques unique to Yuzen dyeing, such as tarashikomi (blurring) and moth-eating. By using these techniques, your work will be as close to the authentic as possible. Then, you wash away the blue lines in the preliminary drawing. After drying, it is finished with an original "Kaga-Yuzen" stamp.

The Kaga-Yuzen artist you learn is one of the few craftsmen with very high skills. Just meeting them and seeing their delicate skills is worth the experience for you.

The experience is limited to one group at a time, so anyone can participate at ease. Of course, you can take home the finished work right away. The only handkerchief in the world!
