Tsubakihara Tenmangu Shrine

Tsubakihara Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the deified scholar and patron of learning, commonly known as Tenjin in Japan. The shrine was originally established in 1297, when it was transferred  from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto.

Later, it became a prayer site for the Maeda family, lords of the Kaga Domain, and was referred to as Tai Tenmangu, the guardian shrine of the Kanaura village area. In the Kanei era (1624–1644), it was relocated to its present site, which was then called Mount Tsubakihara (Tsubakihara-yama). During the Meiji period, it was officially renamed Tsubakihara Jinja.
