“Shinsen Retreat” is a program that, in addition to the calligraphy art workshop Shinsen Art, offers the opportunity to learn mindfulness meditation and other practices for cultivating inner balance. Held at Shukubo Shinsen within Hokkuji Temple—founded by Kitakata Shinsen, a celebrated calligrapher and poet-monk of the Meiji era—the retreat allows participants to experience Kanazawa’s rich natural and cultural environment while acquiring meditation techniques that can be applied in daily life.
Program Features:
Experience a mindful state through the calligraphy art workshop Shinsen Art.
The program begins with a preparation session for self-reflection, followed by a calligraphy art experience where participants choose a character from Shinsen’s works and express it using water and ink. The completed piece can be taken home as a unique keepsake and cherished as a personal amulet, making it a popular workshop among visitors to Kanazawa.

Lecture Videos and Original Booklets:
We provide lecture videos (approximately 15 minutes in total, with English audio and Japanese script) that explain practical mindfulness techniques in an easy-to-understand manner, along with a booklet to support your learning.
By accessing the videos through the links in the booklet, you can practice mindfulness while exploring Kanazawa. This allows you to learn at your own pace and deepen your understanding even while traveling.
Applying Mindfulness in Daily Life:
The videos teach various mindfulness techniques, which participants can practice while enjoying Kanazawa's attractions based out of Shinzen Hall. Experiences such as visiting the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, D.T. Suzuki Museum, Kenrokuen Garden, and Kanazawa Castle allow participants to cultivate their minds amidst the changing seasons.
Scientifically Based Retreat:
Studies from U.S. universities have shown that groups practicing mindfulness achieve a more ideal state of brain activity compared to those merely relaxing. This program incorporates scientific evidence and original Buddhist teachings to provide practical skills for stress management, not just relaxation.
Program Flow:
1. Calligraphy Session (30 min)
Introduction to Kitakata Shinsen
Select a character that reflects your life or personal theme
Hands-on calligraphy workshop
2. Mindfulness Video at the Temple (60 min)
While your calligraphy piece is drying, you can enjoy the facilities of Hokkuji Temple. Participants receive a program guide and booklet, along with a short tour of the premises. Watch an original mindfulness video (approx. 15 minutes) and learn meditation techniques. At the end of the session, a certificate of completion will be presented.
3. Practice During Sightseeing
Kanazawa offers several spots where you can experience mindfulness. We encourage you to practice meditation during your sightseeing for a deeper experience.
4. Applying in Daily Life
The meditation methods you learn can be applied in everyday life. Record your reflections and insights in the original booklet provided.
