A paper doll painting hands-on, just two minutes from Kenrokuen Garden

Following a model or your imagination, design your own paper doll the way you like

Round, graceful and covered with multicolor patterns, Hachiman-Okiagari dolls are considered some of the oldest traditional toys of Japan. Made of paper using a technique similar to paper mache, they were typically given to newborn babies to wish them good health and happiness in the future, or as a gift to congratulate someone recovering from illness or ill-fated experiences. Not far from Kenrokuen Garden, the Ishikawa Local Products Center offers the chance to try out painting your own Hachiman-Okiagari doll. Using all the colors you need from a set laid out by the facility, you will draw the facial details and patterns on the dress. You can follow a model or just follow your imagination. This is as simple as it sounds although you will soon find out that painting such delicate details on a tiny doll requires a certain amount of focus and confidence in the handling of the brush. It is nevertheless a very relaxing workshop, particularly appropriate if you are traveling with children.
