Chokin is the art of metal carving, which developed as a technique for creating decorations for Japanese swords, known as tosogu. Japanese sword decorations, which embody the samurai's spirit, are infused with various wishes and aesthetic sensibilities. The tsuba (sword guard) is a prime example.
Through this experience, you can learn about the wisdom and aesthetic sensibilities of our predecessors, as well as the metalworking techniques that supported them, by exploring the art of the tsuba.
【 Experience Details 】
1. Learn about Tsuba
A craftsman will explain the functionality and decorative aspects of the tsuba (sword guard) and the chokin (metal carving) techniques used to create them.
2. Demonstration by a craftsman
A craftsman will give a demonstration of hand-carving metal. The delicate yet powerful use of the chisel is sure to captivate you.
3. Metal carving experience
You'll experience metal carving firsthand using a chisel. You'll carve a design onto a small tsuba (sword guard), polish it, and then attach a fitting to complete it.
You can take home your creation as a keychain.
Metal Craftsman:Toru Nishiyama
After studying metalwork at Kanazawa College of Art, he gained experience as a craftsman in jewelry and metal processing.He researches traditional metal carving techniques and thetools used by craftsmen and is also proficient in the traditional inlay technique known aszogan. He operates a metal carving class in Kodatsuno, Kanazawa, where he shares hisskills and passion with people both in Japan and abroad.
