Honda-no-Mori Park
Urban Green Oasis
Honda-no-Mori Park is a lush green space that once formed part of the residence of the Honda family, the chief retainers of the Kaga Domain. It sits at the heart of the “Kenrokuen Cultural Zone,” an area where many of Kanazawa’s major cultural institutions are concentrated. Within the park, visitors can enjoy not only the deep, tranquil forest but also a variety of cultural facilities, including the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History, the National Crafts Museum, and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art. This makes it an appealing area where one can explore Kanazawa’s history and arts while strolling through nature.
The park is enveloped by rich evergreen forests dominated by glossy-leaved species such as Castanopsis (sudajii) and Machilus (tabunoki), creating a calm atmosphere throughout the year. In summer, the sound of higurashi cicadas echoes through the trees, earning the area a place among the “100 Soundscapes of Japan.” Despite its central location, the park offers a peaceful retreat beloved by locals and visitors alike. Its close proximity to Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenrokuen Garden, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art makes it an ideal spot to visit between sightseeing destinations.
