Ochaya(Teahouse) Art Museum
Where Time Stands Still: The Elegance of Traditional Teahouse Architecture
The Ochaya(traditional teahouse) Art Museum is a designated cultural property of Kanazawa City, preserving an authentic ochaya structure built in 1820.
Ochaya(Teahouses) were exclusive venues where geisha entertained guests with music, dance, and conversation.
The second floor was once used as a reception space to entertain guests. It preserves the refined beauty of traditional Japanese design, with intricate details seen in every element—from sliding doors (fusuma) and ceilings to decorative alcoves (tokonoma) and wooden pillars.
Among these, the detached “Ultramarine Room” (Gunjō-no-ma) is a must-see, known for its deep blue walls and elegant atmosphere.
On the first floor, visitors can admire exquisite items used in these refined banquets, such as Kaga zōgan (metal inlay), Kaga maki-e (lacquerware with gold and silver powder), and Kutani porcelain. Delicate hair ornaments and other decorative accessories are also on display, creating an atmosphere truly worthy of being called a museum.
In the courtyard, you can enjoy the soothing sounds of a suikinkutsu—a traditional water harp garden feature—offering a moment of elegance that delights the ears as much as the eyes.
