Owaricho Shinisekouryu-kan (Old Shop Exchange Hall)
— A Timeless Journey into Kanazawa’s Traditional Merchant Culture —
Located in the heart of Kanazawa, the Owari-cho district was once a bustling commercial center, home to over 40 rice brokerage shops. This historic merchant town flourished as a hub of trade and craftsmanship, and today, it is where you’ll find the Owaricho Shinisekouryu-kan (Old Shop Exchange Hall) — a unique cultural facility where the spirit and techniques of Kanazawa’s long-standing shops are passed down through generations.
More than just a sightseeing stop, this facility offers a rare opportunity to experience the authentic traditions of Kanazawa that you won’t encounter by simply touring the usual attractions.
The building itself is a beautifully preserved traditional townhouse (machiya), originally built in the Meiji era for a medicine wholesaler. With its warm wooden interiors, earthen walls, thick beams, and storerooms, the house retains the atmosphere of a bygone era. The architecture alone offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of Kanazawa’s past.
The permanent exhibition features real tools, signboards, packaging, and other historical items from some of Kanazawa’s most prominent long-established businesses. As you read the stories behind each shop — their founding tales, philosophies, and carefully preserved techniques — you’ll come to understand how Kanazawa’s culture and economy were shaped by generations of artisans and merchants.
In addition, several themed special exhibitions are held throughout the year, offering new insights and deeper appreciation of Kanazawa's heritage.
The hall also functions as a local tourist information center, providing travel brochures, directions, access to restrooms, and free umbrella rentals — a welcoming touch for visitors who may need a short break or a bit of assistance during their journey.
Conveniently located on the walking route from Omicho Market to Higashi Chaya District, the Owaricho Shinisekouryu-kan is an ideal place to stop by during your exploration of the city. Take a moment to rest and enjoy an intimate encounter with the rich cultural layers of Kanazawa in a serene, traditional setting.
