Experience making authentic Japanese confectionery just a block away from Omicho Market
Established more than a hundred years ago, Koshiyama Kanseido is a reputable sweet shop offering a wide range of “wagashi” products
Just a 5-minute walk from both Higashi Chayagai and the picturesque Omicho covered market, one of Kanazawa’s highlights and a must-see for every food culture enthusiast, you will find Koshiyama Kanseido’s sloped façade. Founded in 1888, this is one of Kanazawa’s oldest confectionery shops. Inside, you are welcome to discover the sophisticated and colorful world of “wagashi”, the general term for traditional Japanese confections, by attending a delightful hands-on experience. Under the guidance of a professional craftsperson, you will make yourself 2 different types (2 of each type) of “namagashi”, the delicacies served during tea ceremonies. It’s a pleasant way to experience a bit of Kanazawa’s sophisticated food culture and the perfect activity for a rainy day…
The shop also provides a cozy space in which you are free to take your time and enjoy your freshly made sweets, right there on the spot.
Koshiyama Kanseido provides a great variety of sweets, including some of the most popular and emblematic confectioneries to be found around Kanazawa. Here are a few items of particular interest:
Kinjomaki: a triangle-shaped baked sweet made of red bean paste rolled in “Castella” sponge cake dough (originated in Portugal).
Habutae Kaga-renkon mochi: Perfectly white, smooth rice cakes kneaded with locally produced lotus root paste.
Don’t miss this opportunity to get a close-up glimpse of a wonderful variety of “wagashi”, taste them and take a few home as souvenirs from your stay in Kanazawa!
To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Koshiyama Kanseido asks their customers to comply with the following measures while visiting their shop:
