Experience and learn the secrets of Kaga Yuzen, one of Kanazawa’s most sophisticated handicrafts, in a very elegant studio!
Release your creativity by combining a great variety of patterns and colors!
Dyeing has a long and complex history around Kanazawa. Its modern incarnation, called “Kaga Yuzen”, originated around the 17th century and takes influence from the dyeing techniques used by renowned Kyoto masters. It has evolved to a highly regarded art form with a distinctive pictorial style characterized by graceful and sophisticated patterns and drawings, mainly of flowers and plants, executed using the five traditional colors of the area, namely: indigo, dark crimson, yellow ocher, grass green and ancient purple.
Among the various galleries and studios that provide hands-on dyeing experiences, Akaneya is definitely worth a visit. Set in a lovely traditional house roughly 5 minutes from the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, it has been in business for more than a hundred years. Their hands-on experiences allow you to really release your creativity. Working inside the gallery among the studio’s creations, you will first choose from a wide variety of bases, ranging from small tote bags to pouches. You will then create a design of your own using as many stencil patterns as you wish, and combine them with the five traditional colors used in Kaga Yuzen dyeing. It’s a fun way to discover one of Kanazawa’s most accomplished handicrafts inside a very elegant space.
