There is a sense of both freedom and obstruction on the street. 

Japan possessed free spaces that lay beyond the reach of established systems and authority, known as the public realm called "Kugai". Yet the street is not merely a symbol of freedom and liberation: it also harbors a sense of discomfort and instability that results from a logic of exclusion. Formed in 1986, the ROJO Society (Street Observation Society) presented modes of observing and reinterpreting the street. Some forty years later, this exhibition explores the public nature of the street through a showcase not only of contemporary art, but also historical materials, various games, and traditional Japanese public bathhouses and street performances.
