Wood Charring Experience at Iwamoto Kiyoshi Studio

Join us at Iwamoto Kiyoshi Studio and create your own wooden tray using Japanese traditional wood charring technique.

IWAMOTO KIYOSHI STUDIO

This woodcraft studio opened in 1913 and has specialized in wooden crafts made from paulownia wood (known as kiri-kougei in Japanese) ever since. While hibachi (a traditional Japanese brazier) was their main product when they first started, they have since branched out into various wooden items. As part of the experience, you will get to step inside their workshop and learn about the various tools and machinery used to craft the products.

OVERVIEW

1. Using a gas burner, char the outer surfaces of a paulownia wood coaster
2. Buff the surfaces with the buffer machine inside the studio
3. Carve a logo onto the buffed coaster with a branding iron

Don't forget to visit the shop as well!
