Ishikawa Prefectural Zeniya Gohei Memorial Museum / The House of Zenigo
Zeniya Gohei (1773–1852) was a wealthy merchant in the shipping business who played a key role in supporting the finances of the Kaga Domain with the immense wealth he accumulated. Amid Japan’s isolation policy during the late Edo period, he recognized early the importance of promoting domestic industries and trade, actively traveling both within and outside of the country with foresight. He worked not for personal gain but for the prosperity of the nation and its people.
At the Zeniya Gohei Memorial Museum, you can learn about his life through an animated video and experience a simulated voyage aboard a 1/4 scale model of a Kitamae-bune, the famous coastal trading ship. The museum also features Zeniya Gohei’s Residence, a restored 3-story warehouse that has been relocated and recreated, offering a glimpse into his life. Admission to both locations is included with one ticket.
