Traditional incense-smelling ceremony KODO
KODO is one of the Japanʼs ʻthree great forms of artʼ together with tea ceremony and flower arrangement.
About KODO
KODO established itself as a distinguished art form in Japan at least 500 years ago. It is known as one of the Japan’s ‘three great forms of art’ together with tea ceremony and flower arrangement. In an incense ceremony, a traditional KODO practice try to find out the incense being burned by identifying the subtly differences in the fragrance of scented woods. Incense ceremonies often have themes related to classical Japanese poetry, historic events or seasonal changes in which the participants enjoy. In the KODO game called KUMIKO, the participants are presented with a number of incenses at the same time and they are asked to identify which scents and in what order they were burnt. KUMIKO is not meant to be a competition by itself but as a refined form of recreation for all players to have fun with the fragrance, enjoy the space and immerse in the artistic atmosphere of the event.
