Private Maki-e Workshop: Create Your Own Lacquered Chopsticks & Bowls
10% of the proceeds will be donated to aid victims of the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake
※10% of the proceeds will be donated to support the recovery efforts in the Noto Peninsula, which was unfortunately
struck by an earthquake on January 1, 2024, and by torrential floods in late September.
What is maki-e?
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique where gold, silver, or tin powder is sprinkled onto a lacquered surface to create intricate patterns.
During this workshop, you can freely design your own patterns and images, crafting your very own unique piece of art.
Enjoy the warmth and softness of traditional lacquerware bowls and chopsticks used during the workshop.
Overall process of maki-e experience:
1. Draw your original design on chopsticks or a bowl using lacquer
2. Sprinkle tin powder onto the design
3. Polish the surface to finish
Your work will be sent to your accommodation two days after the workshop. Please note that delivery may take a few days, depending on your location.
Perfect for a memorable souvenir!
*Please note that the lacquer may cause allergies and skin rash.

at least one week before you leave Japan, as that allows us enough time to ship your work to you.
We cannot ship overseas.
By taking part in these hands-on workshops, you will help contribute to creating new opportunities for up-and-coming artists working in Kanazawa.
Japan is currently facing a nationwide crisis, as more and more artisans find themselves without anyone in
younger generations to teach their techniques to preserve Japan’s precious traditional crafts.
We believe that participation in these workshops will benefit the artists, not only by exposing these crafts to more potential successors,
but also by providing them with inspiration and motivation through their interactions with you. We therefore wholeheartedly invite you to join us for the workshop!
