Springtime in Kanazawa—Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom

Kanazawa is a castle town where the historical townscapes have remained strong since the Edo period. Among them, some of the popular cherry blossoms viewing spots are as follows: Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s three most famous gardens, has been selected as one of the top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots within Japan, Kanazawa Castle Park which is sometimes called the “museum of stone walls” and the riverside along the Kazue-machi Chaya (Geisha) District. All of them have been a part of the daily lives of the people of Kanazawa since ancient times.

Kanazawa ”Yukitsuri" and "Komokake"

In Kanazawa, there are a number of traditional decorative rituals during the winter. These include practices such as yukitsuri, or ropes installed into garden trees prevent their branches from being broken by the moisture-laden snow unique to the Sea of Japan coast, as well as komokake, or sheets of woven straw mats that protect traditional earthen walls. These winter attractions gently add color to the monotone cityscape. This video work shows the installation of the yukitsuri as well as the hanging and removal of handcrafted komokake by craftsmen, covering the entire process which takes place from winter until the arrival of spring in the Nagamachi Samurai Residence area. We hope you enjoy!
