Kenrokuen Garden

One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens

No matter how many times you visit, Kenrokuen always offers a different view depending on the season and time of day. It’s a must-see spot for first-time visitors and returning travelers alike.

Beyond the famous photo spot Kotojitoro Lantern and the winter tradition of yukitsuri (rope supports to protect trees from snow), consider these lesser-known highlights:

◆Plum Grove – Around 200 plum trees of 20 varieties bloom through late March, offering delicate beauty before cherry blossom season.

◆Yamazakiyama Hill – A small artificial hill near the Kodatsuno Entrance, especially stunning with autumn foliage, but lovely year-round thanks to its moss.

◆Kinjo Reitaku Sacred Well – Said to be the origin of the name “Kanazawa,” and known as a lucky power spot for financial fortune.

National Crafts Museum

Retro Western-Style Architecture & Modern Crafts

Relocated from Tokyo’s Kitanomaru Park in 2020, this is Japan’s only national museum dedicated to modern crafts and design. Its collection includes ceramics, glass, lacquerware, wood and bamboo crafts, textiles, metalwork, industrial design, and graphic design.

The Meiji-era Western-style buildings—relocated and restored former army facilities—are registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Both the exterior and interior are highly photogenic.

You’ll also find a Pokémon-themed manhole cover (“Poké Lid”) on the grounds.

Art Path(Bijutsu-no Komichi)

A lush walking trail descending toward the Nakamura Memorial Museum area.

Running alongside the steps is the Tatsumi Water Channel flowing from Kenrokuen, forming a small waterfall. The sound of running water and abundant greenery make this a favorite relaxation spot for locals.

Note: The steps are somewhat steep—please watch your footing, especially after rain.

Nakamura Memorial Museum

Masterpieces of Tea Ceremony Art

This museum introduces Kanazawa’s deep tea culture through a collection of about 1,000 works, including tea utensils, Edo-period paintings, Ko-Kutani ware, Kaga maki-e lacquerware, and Kaga zogan metal inlay.

It’s a wonderful place to appreciate the refined aesthetic traditions that still thrive in Ishikawa today.

D.T. Suzuki Museum

A Space for Quiet Contemplation

Dedicated to the world-renowned Buddhist philosopher D.T. Suzuki, who was born in Kanazawa.

Designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, the museum consists of three spaces and three gardens. The minimalist architecture and the serene Water Mirror Garden create a profound sense of stillness—so much so that you may forget you’re in the city center.

The large camphor tree and peaceful walkways are also highlights.
