Day trip to Sacred Mountain "Mt. Tateyama"
The "Three Great Sacred Mountains of Japan" refers to three famous mountains—Mount Fuji, Mount Hakusan, and Mount Tateyama—which have been revered as objects of faith for centuries.
Tateyama, one of the highlights of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, is a prominent mountain. However, there is no single peak called "Tateyama." The name refers to the collective peaks of Mt. Oyama (3,003m), Mt. O-nanjiyama (3,015m), and Mt. Fujinoritake (2,999m), all of which are considered part of Tateyama.
Among these, Mt. Oyama is particularly popular because it is accessible even to beginners. The reasons for this include:
①The use of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which allows easy access to the starting point of the hike, Murodo (2,450m), via public transportation.②From Murodo to the summit of Mount Oyama, although there is a steep section towards the end, the well-maintained trail reduces the chance of getting lost, making the hike much safer.③The hike from Murodo to Mount Oyama's summit takes about 2 to 3 hours one-way, making it a suitable day-trip course.
In fact, it is possible to enjoy a day trip to Tateyama while staying in Kanazawa. Why not challenge yourself to climb Mount Oyama and experience the grandeur of nature and the world of faith? This model course introduces a hike to Mount Oyama via the typical "Ichinokoshi" route.

IR Ishikawa Railway & Ainokaze Toyama Railway (approx. 60 min) or
Hokuriku Shinkansen (approx. 20 min)
from Toyama St. to Murodo(the starting point of hiking)
From Toyama Station to Tateyama Station, you can take the Toyama Chihou Railway (approx. 60 minutes). However, a very convenient option available during the summer to early autumn is the "Toyama-Murodo Direct Bus" (operated by Toyama Chihou Railway's Summer Mountain Bus Murodo Line). This direct bus connects Toyama Station to Murodo (elevation 2,450m), the starting point for the hike, without the need for transfers, allowing for a smooth journey. If you're lucky, you may even spot wild Japanese monkeys along the way.
For more details, including bus stops, timetables, and other information, please visit the official website of Toyama Chiho Railway.

Murodo Terminal(2,450m)
The Murodo Terminal is a key hub along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, located at an elevation of 2,450 meters. Here, you can replenish necessary items for your hike, such as gear, water, and food. It is also a place where you can prepare and acclimatize your body to the high-altitude environment before starting your climb. Be sure to allow your body to adjust to the altitude before beginning the hike. Right after departing from the terminal, you will come across the Tateyama Sacred Spring, where you can hydrate with fresh water.
Note: The weather in the mountains can change rapidly, and strong winds may occur, so be sure to have proper gear and be well-prepared.

Mikuriga-ike Pond
A Beautiful Lake Famous for Its Scenic Photography Spots
Mikuriga-ike Pond is surrounded by majestic mountains and beautiful flowers, offering a stunning view of nature throughout the four seasons. In particular, the reflection of the Tateyama Mountain Range on the lake's surface captivates visitors and makes it a popular spot for photography.

Well-Maintained Trail
Upon departing from Murodo Terminal, you will begin on a relatively flat trail. This section allows you to enjoy the beautiful surrounding nature, making for a pleasant start to your hike. The trail is well-maintained, with plenty of signs, so there's no need to worry about getting lost. After about an hour, you will arrive at Ichinokoshi Point (2,692m).

Ichinokoshi (2,700m)
Elevation: 2,700m, An Important Resting Point on the Tateyama Climb
Ichinokoshi is located at an elevation of 2,700 meters. Here, you'll find a mountain lodge and a public restroom (for a fee), where you can take a short break. On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of distant mountains and truly appreciate the grandeur of nature. From Ichinokoshi, the route to the summit of Mt. Oyama (3,003m) involves a steep, rocky ascent on an unpaved path.

Tateyama (Mt. Oyama) Summit(3,003m)
After climbing steep rocky terrain for about 1 to 1.5 hours, you will reach the summit at an elevation of 3,003m. At the top, you'll find a mountain hut and the Oyama Shrine (Peak Shrine). From July to September, a Shinto priest and shrine maidens stay at the summit to welcome visitors. From the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view, offering a moment of great accomplishment as you take in the magnificent scenery.

Oyama Shinto Shrine
The Oyama Shrine consists of three main shrines: the Tateyama Summit Honsya, the Ashikura Chugū Kigan-den, and the Iwakura Maedate Shadan. As a major spiritual site of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, it has received the reverence of the imperial family as well as prominent military families, and it was also an imperial prayer site for Empress Genmei and Emperor Go-Daigo. The shrine buildings were constructed by the successive Maeda clan lords of the Kaga Domain until 1860.

Return journey along the same path as the outward journey

From Murodo Terminal to Bijodaira (Approx. 50 minutes)

Be sure to check the bus schedule for the return trip and choose your transportation method based on your hiking pace. In this model course, we will introduce a route that does not use the direct bus, but instead combines buse, cable car, and train.
You will take the Takayama Kogen(Highland) Bus from Murodo Terminal to Bijodaira plateau, with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes. If the weather conditions are right, you might be able to enjoy a stunning view of a sea of clouds right in front of you.
